M3/T3[5]The Samsung Galaxy S II is a touchscreen- enabled, slate- format Androidsmartphone designed, developed, and marketed by Samsung Electronics. It has additional software features, expanded hardware, and a redesigned physique compared to its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S. The S II was launched with Android 2. Gingerbread", with updates to Android 4. Jelly Bean". Samsung unveiled the S II on 1. February 2. 01. 1 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.[6] It was one of the slimmest smartphones of the time, mostly 8. The Galaxy S II has a 1. GHz dual- core "Exynos" system on a chip (So. C) processor,[8] 1 GB of RAM, a 1. WVGASuper AMOLED Plus screen display and an 8- megapixel camera with flash and 1. It is one of the first devices to offer a Mobile High- definition Link (MHL),[9] which allows up to 1. MHL enabled TV or to an MHL to HDMI adapter, while charging the device at the same time. USB On- The- Go is supported.[1. The user- replaceable battery gives up to ten hours of heavy usage, or two days of lighter usage.[1. According to Samsung, the Galaxy S II is capable of providing 9 hours of talk time on 3. G and 1. 8. 3 hours on 2. G.[1. 2][1. 3]The Galaxy S II was succeeded by the Samsung Galaxy S III in May 2. Release[edit]The Galaxy S II was given worldwide release dates starting from May 2. On May 9, 2. 01. 1, Samsung announced that they had received pre- orders for 3 million Galaxy S II units globally.[1. Some time after the device's release, Samsung also released a variation of the phone known as the Galaxy R, which uses a Nvidia. Tegra 2 chipset.[1. Samsung also reportedly shipped free Galaxy S II's to several developers of the custom Android distribution Cyanogen. Mod (particularly those who had maintained its ports for the Galaxy S with an intent for them to port Cyanogen. Mod 7 to the device.[1. Features[edit]Software and services[edit]The Galaxy S II was launched with Android 2. Gingerbread". American variants began shipments with the slightly updated version 2. Version 2. 3. 6 was made globally available on December 1. On March 1. 3, 2. Samsung began to roll out upgrades to Android 4. Ice Cream Sandwich"[2. KIES to users in South Korea, Hungary, Poland and Sweden. Russian users received the update on July 5, 2. Europe received it on August 1, 2. In February 2. 01. Samsung began rolling out an update to Android 4. Jelly Bean" for the device.[2. The S II employs the Touch. Wiz 4. 0 user interface, following the same principle as Touch. Wiz 3. 0 found on the Galaxy S, with new improvements, such as hardware acceleration. It also has an optional gesture- based interaction called "motion" which (among other things) allows users to zoom in and out by placing two fingers on the screen and tilting the device towards and away from themselves to zoom in and out respectively. This gesture function works on both the web browser and the images in gallery[2. Panning" on Touch. Wiz 4. 0 allows the movement of widgets and icons shortcuts between screens, by allowing the device to be held and moved from side to side to scroll through home screens. This gesture- based management of widgets is a new optional method next to the existing method of holding and swiping between home screens.[2. The Android 4. 1 update backports the Touch. Wiz Nature interface and other features from the Galaxy S III, such as Direct Call, Pop- up Play, Smart Stay, and Easy Mode.[2. Four new Samsung Hub applications were revealed at the 2. MWC: Social Hub, which integrates popular social networking services into one place rather than in separate applications, Readers Hub, providing the ability to access, read and download online newspapers, ebooks and magazines from a worldwide selection, Music Hub (in partnership with 7digital,[2. Game Hub (in partnership with Gameloft,[2. Additional applications include Kies 2. Kies Air,[2. 9] All. Share (for DLNA), Voice Recognition, Google Voice Translation,[3. Google Maps with Latitude, Places, Navigation (beta) and Lost Phone Management, Adobe Flash 1. Quick. Office application and 'Quick. Type' by SWYPE. Hardware and design[edit]. Dismantled Samsung Galaxy S II in black, from left to right components include the handset, battery and back cover. The Galaxy S II has a 1. GHz dual core. ARM Cortex- A9 processor that uses Samsung's own 'Exynos 4. System on a chip (So. C) that was previously code- named "Orion". The Exynos branded So. C was the source of much speculation concerning another branded successor to the previous "Hummingbird" single- core So. C of the Samsung Galaxy S. The Exynos 4 Dual 4. Exynos 4. 21. 0) uses ARM's Mali- 4. MP GPU.[3. 6][3. 7] This graphics GPU, supplied by ARM, is a move away from the Power. VR GPU of the Samsung Galaxy S.[3. The Exynos 4. 21. ARM's SIMD engine (also known as Media Processing Engine, or 'NEON' instructions), and may give a significant performance advantage in critical performance situations such as accelerated decoding for many multimedia codecs and formats (e. On. 2's VP6/7/8 or Real formats).[3. The Mali 4. 00 GPU in the Exynos 4. SOC is one of the only, if not the only GPU powering Android devices, that does not support GL_RGB Framebuffer Objects (FBOs), only GL_RGBA. The newer Galaxy S II (9. G), based on the Power. VR SGX5. 40, does not exhibit the issue. At the 2. 01. 1 Game Developers Conference ARM's representatives demonstrated 6. Hz framerate playback in stereoscopic 3. D running on the same Mali- 4. MP and Exynos So. C. They said that an increased framerate of 7. Hz would be possible through the use of an HDMI 1. The Motorola Atrix advertised in June 2. August 2. 01. 1 the UK Advertising Standards Authority ruled that the Atrix was not as powerful as Galaxy S II due to its faster processor.[4. A newer Samsung Galaxy S II (i. Within the battery compartment there is an external micro. SD card slot capable of recognizing and utilizing a 6. GB micro. SDXC card.[4. The Samsung Galaxy S II uses a 1. WVGA (8. 00 x 4. 80) Super AMOLED Pluscapacitive touchscreen that is covered by Gorilla Glass with an oleophobic fingerprint- resistant coating. The display is an upgrade of its predecessor, and the "Plus" signifies that the display panel has done away with Pentile matrix to regular RGB matrix display which results in a 5. This translates to grain reduction and sharper images and text. In addition, Samsung has claimed that Super AMOLED Plus displays are 1. Super AMOLED displays.[4. Some phones have display issues, with a few users reporting a "yellow tint" on the left bottom edge of the display when a neutral grey background is displayed.[4. The Galaxy S II uses Yamaha audio hardware.[4. The Galaxy S II's predecessor, the original Galaxy S, used Wolfson's WM8. DAC.[4. 8] User feedback on Internet forums as well as an in- depth review at Clove,[4. Yamaha chip's inferior sound quality compared to that of the Wolfson chip featured in the original Galaxy S. AT& T and T- Mobile have released the Android Nougat update for their Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge variants. The update brings a whole lot of Nougat goodies, and also the latest security patch for the month of February 2. The software version of the Nougat update for the AT& T S7 and S7 Edge is G9. AUCU4. BQA6 and G9. AUCU4. BQA6, while that for T- Mobile variants is G9. TUVU4. BQB1 and G9. TUVU4. BQB1. Update [February 1. Well, we got some good news about the Note 5 Nougat release. As we just spotted the Android 7. Note 5 variants — AT& T, T- Mobile and Canada — receive certification for 7. Nougat build at Wi. Fi Alliance, we are sure that the updates are under finalization stage at Samsung. What’s more? They might have been shipped to respective carriers for testing even. Guess we would hear soon from others like Verizon and Sprint too, while as only Samsung needs to test the update as regards international variant, its update could be hitting us anytime. So, yes, if you own SM- N9. C, you could see your Galaxy Note 5 gets the Nougat released by February end, or early March. We also expect the Galaxy S6 to receive Nougat update around the same time as Note 5. Update [January 3. Galaxy S6 is expected to receive the Nougat update pretty soon, as a user manual for Android 7. Samsung Russia. This is our clue that the S6 Nougat OTA could be hitting devices very soon in Europe. After all, we saw something similar as regards Galaxy S7 Nougat too, whose 7. Although the manual makes mention of S6 Edge and S6 Edge Plus, we believe all three S6 sets are going to receive the update together, or at least the S6 and S6 Edge. Update [January 2. Samsung is now testing the Android 7. Nougat update for Galaxy Tab S2. The update will be coming to several of Galaxy Tab S2 variants including AT& T, Verizon, T- Mobile and Sprint in the US. Update [January 1. Samsung has releases the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Nougat update to masses in Europe, which means that even non- beta users are receiving the Android 7. OTA update today. Looks like yesterday’s report about Nougat release in halt from China was all about Chinese variant, which is based on Qualcomm processor, because we are seeing it live for the Exynos based S7 sets Samsung sold in Europe and some parts of Asia. The build number of the Galaxy S7 Nougat update is G9. FXXU1. DPLT, while that for S7 Edge is G9. FXXU1. DPLT. Update [January 1. Bummer! Looks like due to issues unknown, Samsung has had to halt the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Nougat release for a while. Yep, we’re all sad to learn that, but we hope the bugs are fixed pretty soon to allow the company to perform the global release soon. All the while, Samsung has continued the release of beta Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge in China as today, users reported that build DAQ4 is showing up as an OTA. Update [January 1. Samsung has finally rolled out the official Android 7. Nougat build to Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge users. The update comes with build number G9. FXXU1. DPLT and is currently rolling out to users who participated in the Galaxy beta program. For everyone else, Samsung will roll out the update on January 1. Update [January 0. Some cool guy on the web in what it seems to be, in possession of stable build of Samsung Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 Edge, teased a screenshot today that gives us build no. Samsung Nougat release (G9. FXXU1. DPLR). Should be G9. FXXU1. DPLR for the Galaxy S7 then. Of course, this could be edited easily from build. Here is the screenshot. Update [December 2. Samsung has released the 4th iteration of its Nougat beta update, which is rolling out right now dubbed as software version G9. FXXU1. ZPLH and G9. FXXU1. ZPLH for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge respectively. The PLH update comes in at 2. MB and removes the Notes app, while bug fixing and improving the device stability. Update [November 1. New leak today revealed the software version of the Android 7. Nougat update we would see in action on the US Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge sets at AT& T, Sprint, Verizon and T- Mobile. Yes, that’s right. Even though Samsung has only released the beta version of its Nougat update yet, only yesterday, the leak mountain is rolling down build no. Android 7. 0 build for the US carrier tied S7 and S7 Edge sets. Here are the build no. Nougat update for USA carriers. Galaxy S7: G9. 30. AUCU4. ZPK4, G9. 30. TUVU4. ZPK4, G9. 30. PVPU4. ZPK4 and G9. Samsung is now delivering on its promise of November 9 release of its Android 7. Nougat beta update, as we are seeing users in Korea now receiving the Nougat beta as an OTA. The image below depicts just that, the Grace UX from Note 7 is also part of the Android 7. Update [November 0. We told you earlier about Samsung updating their Sidesync app to mention support for Android 7. Samsung has the standalone app in Galaxy beta program available for download, which allows you to participate for latest UX from Samsung, that comes along with Android 7. Nougat update. Yes, if you want Nougat as beta update, you can enroll into the program, but it makes sense only if you own a Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge, and are in UK, which is where the beta program is applicable. Samsung hasn’t mentioned S7 sets BTW, but we know from experience that S series gets the major Android update before all other Samsung sets — FYI, Marshmallow released as beta on Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge first last year, in UK. Update [October 2. Samsung today updated its Side. Sync app, that is exclusive to its Galaxy devices only, to inform all those interested that the app now supports Android 7. Well, is Samsung has tested it, then it has to be on a Galaxy device because that’s what the app is meant to run on, which implies that the Nougat update is now running and available for testing on a Galaxy device internally. And that has to be either of Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, because we have already spotted the device Nougat builds, as mentioned here: Galaxy S7 | Galaxy S7 Edge. Update [October 1. We’re yet to hear any official word on Nougat release by Samsung, but already, next version of the OS, Android 7. Google Pixel and Pixel sets. In fact, some Android 7. Pixel devices are already available for download, but while they are working on the Nexus 6. P (on 7. 0), same cannot be said about the Galaxy S6 and S7 because they are still on Android 6. Samsung’s custom skin, Touch. Wiz UI. In case you grew curious — after watching Google Pixel announcement — about when Samsung could be releasing the Android 7. If anything, Samsung could bring the Android 7. Galaxy S6 and S7 on Q2 2. Note 7 too. Q3 2. Note 5, A series, On series, C series, etc. Samsung, some of which could directly see the 7. If this happens, we’ll only be glad. Original article: We don’t expect Samsung to lead the Android 7.
